The Test

It was a dangerous move, but they’d wanted to try this for a while.

Dan raised his voice.

“I need a volunteer.”

Several of their spectators looked around, most looked at the floor. This captive audience thing wasn’t quite what they’d expected it to be. Slowly, a trembling hand rose into the air.

“There we go!” Alex waved his hand. “Come on, come up here.”

Cautiously, a small boy moved to the front; his peers making room for him to pass. Dan leaned into Alex and whispered:

“Try not to scare them. I can’t deal with the screaming.”

Nodding, Alex turned his attention to the little boy. He couldn’t be more than six. Perfect for them to test this out, he couldn’t do any damage if he decided to lash out, and they’d be able to catch him if needed.

“Ok. Stand here, please.” Alex stood the boy front and centre. He wanted everyone to see this. He placed a mask over the boy's face, then rested his hands on the child's shoulders and softly said “Just relax. Don’t panic and it’ll be fine.”

Alex nodded at Dan, who moved a step forward and nodded in return. Swiftly, Alex gripped the boy under his arms, swung him into the air and tossed him to Dan, who caught the child above his head.

Alex kicked a switch by his feet and a loud whirring started up. A couple of girls screamed.

Looking over, Alex grinned. Dan had the boy positioned directly in front of the wind machine, the child's superhero cape billowing like he was flying. He had a massive smile on his face. “Mummy! I’m flying!”

Alex and Dan exchanged looks. All they needed to do was get the machine back to work, and they’d be in the clear.
